How Is Child Maintenance Calculated in Singapore?

If you’re a parent facing separation, “how much maintenance will I get — or have to pay” is usually close to the top of your worry list. Unlike some countries, Singapore doesn’t use a fixed formula or calculator. Here’s what actually determines the number.

There’s no fixed percentage or formula

Unlike systems that apply a set percentage of income, Singapore courts assess child maintenance based on the actual needs of the child and the financial capacity of both parents. This means two families with similar incomes can end up with different maintenance amounts, depending on their specific circumstances.

What the court actually looks at

  • The child’s reasonable needs — covering essentials like education, healthcare, food, and daily living, not lifestyle extras
  • Both parents’ income and earning capacity — not just current salary, but ability to earn
  • The standard of living the child was accustomed to before the separation
  • Any special needs the child may have, medical or otherwise

Both parents are generally expected to contribute, even where one parent has primary care — maintenance isn’t only paid by the parent who moves out.

How it’s typically decided

Where parents can agree, maintenance is often settled by negotiation or mediation and recorded in a Consent Order — usually faster and less stressful than litigation. Where there’s disagreement, the court will assess the evidence — income documents, expense records, and each party’s circumstances — before making an order.

Can the amount change later?

Yes. Maintenance orders aren’t fixed forever. Either parent can apply to vary the order where there’s been a material change in circumstances — a significant change in income, job loss, or a shift in the child’s needs as they grow older.

What if maintenance stops being paid?

This happens more often than people expect, and it’s genuinely stressful when it does. Singapore law provides enforcement mechanisms for unpaid maintenance, including applications to recover arrears. If you’re facing this, don’t wait — the longer payments go unaddressed, the harder they can be to recover.

Getting a realistic picture for your family

Every family’s numbers look different, and a lot of the anxiety around maintenance comes from simply not knowing what’s realistic. If you’d like an honest read on your situation, Eunice is happy to talk it through on WhatsApp.
